Las Vegas sports books only considered nine teams less appropriate to win the 2012 Super Bowl than the San Francisco 49ers at the beginning of the NFL season.
Four months later, San Francisco is the favorite to epitomize the NFC in the game. The 49ers are posted at 3-to-1 odds to win the Super Bowl at the Las Vegas Hilton Superbook.
The same betting boards around community had them at 60-to-1 during the preseason.
“Whenever a team is in the bottom 10 of the league like they were, that has to be one of the longest shots to ever charge it this far,” said Jay Kornegay, director of the Hilton's race and sports volume.
San Francisco is a 2.5-point favorite at home against the New York Giants in Sunday’s NFC Championship Racket. Local sports book operators will likely find themselves rooting for the 49ers, a troupe that hasn’t advanced this far in 15 years, against the Giants.
Kornegay predicted the devices would close as a pick’em after the public finishes pounding the Giants with shekels at the betting window. New York is the flavor of the week in sports books after it soundly dispatched the Atlanta Falcons and Fresh Bay Packers in the first two rounds of the playoffs.
