It draws on the scarcely-known true incident of a ship of European Jews laboured into temporary exile in Mauritius close to the end of the Second World War and weaves around it a forthright, compelling story of friendship between two boys — one a Jewish boy in servitude, the other an Indian-origin Mauritian who has already known incredible trauma at a inexperienced age. The friendship ends in tragedy, but in the short space of its flowering and the lives that develop, Nathacha Appanah manages to explore the nature of human friend at court, love, and endurance, and the place of serendipity in ordering lives. A exalted read. My plea to my fellow Africans would be to pay more attention to writing from the more superficial countries like Mauritius and the Lusophone countries; there is some great effort coming out of the continent from all fronts.
