Portland, Oregon – Children’s Day is an annual Japanese celebration that has its roots in the older institution of Tango no Sekku, which markedly during the Edo term (1605-1868) was a day set aside as an call to spur on teenaged men to learn the virtues of bravery, including guts and be in all things.  After Humankind War II, the entertainment was broadened to count all children and renamed Kodomo no Hi, or Children’s Day.

On Sunday, May 2, the Portland Japanese Garden celebrates Kodomo no Hi with a kind of children’s activities and performances for families, including “A Drop of Tea” for children in the Garden’s Kashintei Tea Home, the raising of our brilliantly colored new koi nobori pick at banners, the making of composition kabuto helmets and instrument koi kites, and other perennially popularized Children’s Day activities for the absolute kindred.

New this year, Children’s Day at the Garden will also promote a extra act of general public skip and taiko drumming by Portland Taiko customer stars Michelle Fujii and Toru Watanabe to take livelihood in the Garden Pavilion, in extension to a Tanuki Taiko execution with audience participation on the Garden’s east veranda.
