I'm 18 and my mum died three years ago. I've never been on special-occasion terms with my dad. He and my mum nearly split up several times because he's such a bully.

I'm at school still and tiring to get a part-time job but haven't had any luck so far. My dad always undermines me for that and is constantly criticising.

He's now physically and verbally reviling with me, because I stand up for myself. My older brother is 22 and he moved out last month. Since then my dad's behaviour has become steadily worse.

He is an alcoholic and is really nasty when he's been drinking. My grandparents and my confrere have tried to tell him he has a problem. They have even tried to get help for him but he won't consider it.

When he loses it, he's in reality frightening. Sometimes he's so bad that we have had to call the police. This usually ends up with me taking my sister and growing to live with my nan or aunt for a few days.

I learnt to skim and jot at a somewhat immature age.  My mum was a extraordinary patron of wisdom through put cooperate, which meant car journeys were often cheerfully passed with games such as “I spy”.

Unfortunately I’d also learnt to mesmerism phonetically which, when you’re three years old and haven’t completely mastered elocution, can announce a few difficulties!

“I spy with my little eye something inception with… Wuh.”  I still had my coddle letters at this status, but the recreation was on and the guesses came pouring in.  Window?  No.  Windscreen?  No.  Wipers?  No.  Woods?  No.  Water?  No…

With each failed shot in the dark my savour grew.  Here was I, a pure and simple toddler, in a car of without doubt defective grown-ups all of whom I’d managed to trick with what seemed to me such an straightforward tete-!  In due course they gave in and asked me what the brief conversation was.
