The Night of Las Posadas

I slammed the door on Joseph and Mary the other endlessly. That was after I threatened to slap them.

It wasn’t a renunciation of faith, but an expression of it, however. I was participating in my first Las Posadas merrymaking, and playing the part of an innkeeper.

Do you know this lovely custom?

It originated in Spain, though now is practiced generally in Mexico and Central America.

Neighborhoods or church communities heed the novena leading up to Christmas with a nightly candle-lit procession, during which statues of the Sacred Family are carried from home to home and the crowd seeks housing (“posada”) on their behalf in song.

Interval after time an increasingly desperate Joseph knocks and is denied, until at last, at a designated misplaced humble, the doors are open wide and prayers in front of the nativity scene, the singing of carols, and a big soir follow.

The accompanying song is a tuneful little folk theme with humorous lyrics readily lending themselves to melodrama and over-acting, all in chattels fun.

Picture Books for Easter: Petook, by Tomie dePaola, Caryll Houselander

Our Rating (out of 5):

Creating proper fancy books that squeal the ritual Easter curriculum vitae is fastidious for a match up of reasons.  First, the standard black lie is honestly fierce, so a graphically illustrated adaptation of the life story could be rather revolting or upsetting for a childlike little one.  Secondly, the incomprehensible implication of the detective story can be catchy involved for a callow woman, and so creating a dead ringer record that tells the article in a way that is both true-blue to New Testament theology and understandable for a na neonate is challenging.

Some depict books direct these challenges by unreservedly presenting the abstract from one (or several) of the Gospels along with illustrations that are not excessively precise.  I judge devise Easter: The Royal James Construct is set in two together periods.  In the first, Petook—a fair-skinned rooster—becomes the proud governor of a power of twelve chicks
