The father and proprietor of the wonderful possessions called ‘Brief Gardens’ was Bevis Bawa who was born at Chapman Forebears in Darley Entr, which was then a residential square at 4.00 pm on 26th April, 1909, to Benjamin William Bawa and Bertha Marianne Schrader. Benjamin was a rich Muslim, and Bertha was a Burgher. Bevis Bawa grew up to be a prominent prospect artist and a masterful garden conspirator of Sri Lanka.

Besides practicing law, Benjamin Bawa served as an cop in the Ceylon Jolly Infantry, a part-term militia. It had both European and Ceylonese officers, and in 1918 Benjamin was appointed right hand-de-body to the British governor, Sir William Manning.

To Benjamin, Bevis Bawa was his ‘son and heiress’. He always rode with the boy every Wednesday afternoon.
