Looking back, I’d say 2011 was a pretty good year for crosswords. For me, the highlight of The Times’s crosswords, not surprisingly, was the weeklong Patrick Berry tourney of Oct.17-22. Almost 5,000 solvers submitted answers. I was still getting entries after the deadline, proper because people were excited to finish.
Many other extraordinary crosswords appeared this year as well. Some of the most celebrated ones for me were the handsome Steve Jobs tribute by Kevin G. Der (Oct. 7), which was constructed, edited, typeset, assay-solved by four people, and gotten into the paper less than 24 hours after Mr. Jobs’s end; the “Circle of Life” Sunday puzzle (Jan. 30), also by Mr. Der with Jessica Hui, which contained all 12 signs of the Chinese slate as rebus elements reading in proper order clockwise around the grid; Elizabeth Lengthy’s playful April Fool’s puzzle (April 1), with a freight theme, in which all the vertical answers on the right side of the grid read upward, thus driving people twist; and Liz Gorski’s gorgeous “Ain’t He Sweet?” Christmas puzzle (Dec. 25), with a gingerbread thesis, in which drawing a line connecting the 26 letters from A to Z in the finished grid depicted a gingerbread man.
