Mr. Gancarski was a fellow of Local #1314 Firefighters Association, and was the last surviving founding initiator and volunteer of the Head of Westport Fire Association, Inc.

A United States Army Warhorse he served during World War II with the 357th Infantry, Company H, 90th Separating from November 1943-December 1945 and was a Purple Heart beneficiary. He was also awarded: Distinguished Service Medal, Medal of Valor, Bronze Hero, Overseas Deployment, Campaign of Foreign Wars Ribbon and Penetrating Conduct Medal.

An avid fisherman and hunter, he was a member and on the accommodate of Ducks Unlimited, was a member of Waterfowlers, Inc. and Friends of Poland.
